Is Using a GPS Tracker Illegal to Investigate a Husband Affair in South Korea?

Recently, there was an incident where private investigation agency employees were caught after attaching a GPS tracking device to a husband's vehicle upon the wife's request due to suspected infidelity.


Q: Can installing a GPS tracker alone lead to punishment?

In this case, since the tracking device's power was on and real-time location monitoring was possible online, it can be considered that location information had already been collected.


In South Korea, collecting and using an individual's location information without consent can lead to imprisonment of up to 3 years or a fine of up to 30 million won.
